En pensionerad vice polischef vid namn Salang Bunnag (Salang Bunnak) สล้าง บุนนาค (25 mars 1937-) påstods lördagen den 18 oktober 2008 ha sagt att han tänkte "återerövra" Government House. Detta skulle ske efter en religiös ceremoni vid Royal Plaza den 22 oktober, där mer än 10 000 munkar skulle leda en gemensam bön för landet och för att "hela det splittrade thailändska samhället."

Därefter skulle Salang leda mer än 1 000 pensionerade poliser, eller poliser som inte var i aktiv tjänst, för att återta området och ge det tillbaka till det thailändska folket. I en kommentar från anhängare till PAD skulle det bli ett blodbad om Salang tänkte genomföra sin idé. Lördagen den 25 oktober minskade hotet om politiskt våld och en möjlig kupp något då general Salang plötsligt förnekade att han tänkte omringa och återerövra Government House och då general Songkitti Jaggabatara sade att det inte skulle bli någon kupp.

Songkitti sade till media att allt prat om en ny kupp bara var "rykten" och insisterade på att de väpnade styrkorna verkligen inte hade några sådana planer. En kupp skulle inte vara bra för landet sade han och de som fortsätter att prata om det låter som en gammal hackig skiva. Arméns uppgift är enbart att bevara landets suveränitet. Han fortsatte med att uppmana media att bli mera pålitliga och ansvarstagande i sin rapportering. Detta sagt med hänvisning till Salangs påstådda planer om att återta Government House.

En grupp regeringsanhängare kallade Förenade fronten för demokrati mot diktatur (Naeo Ruam Prachathipatai To Tan Phadetkan Haeng Chat) แนวร่วมประชาธิปไตยต่อต้านเผด็จการแห่งชาติ (nor por chor นปช) hade deklarerat att de skulle möta en eventuell militärkupp med motstånd. I stället för blommor till soldaterna skulle man kasta brandbomber på stridsvagnarna!

Det engelska namnet på Förenade fronten för demokrati mot diktatur är United Front for Democracy Against Dictatorship (UDD) och jag kommer i fortsättningen att använda den engelska förkortningen UDD. Det finns flera olika svenska översättningar av UDD. Förutom Förenade fronten för demokrati mot diktatur har jag också sett Demokratiska alliansen mot diktatur och Folkalliansen för demokrati mot diktatur.

Ryktena om en kommande kupp hade blivit mer intensiva efter Anupongs framträdande i TV den 16 oktober. Generalmajor Khattiya Sawasdipol (Khattiya Sawatdiphon) ขัตติยะ สวัสดิผล (2 juni 1951-17 maj 2010), från armén, som stod regeringen nära, anklagade då de militära ledarna för att skrämma folk då de framträdde i TV i full militär mundering.

Khattiya kallades ofta för Seh Daeng (Set Daeng) เสธ.แดง. Detta har översatts till Den röde kommendanten. Då man frågade Khattiya om UDD:s styrkor svarade han att de tränats för strid och att de bytt plats för sin träning från Sanam Luang till ett träningsläger. Han sade också att det fanns hundratals UDD-kämpar med uppgift att bekämpa PAD.

Vidare berättade han att regeringen bett om UDD:s tjänster vid flera tillfällen och att de ombetts bege sig till parlamentet den 7 oktober för att hjälpa Somchai att kunna lämna parlamentsbyggnaden. Han lyckades emellertid, som tidigare omtalat, ta sig ut utan deras hjälp. Khattiya påstod också att UDD-anhängarna uppmanats att bege sig till polishögkvarteret den 13 oktober, då PAD hotat bege sig dit för att demonstrera. Det blev dock ingen konfrontation då PAD ställde in denna aktion. 

Premiärminister Somchai lär ha blivit extremt försiktig för att undgå att bli tagen till fånga av sina motståndare, vilket kunde ha öppnat upp för en kupp. Denna försiktighet hade visat sig genom ständigt ändrade resplaner och färdvägar och att säkerheten skärpts vid hans hem. Förhållandet mellan Somchai och Anupong hade nu blivit extremt dåligt. Men Somchai hade inte haft några planer om att avskeda Anupong eller andra militära ledare från sina poster i sina ambitioner att försöka förhindra ett kuppförsök.

Thailands statliga kommission för mänskliga rättigheter (NHRC) sade att regeringen var tvungen att ta på sig ansvaret för polisens övervåld den 7 oktober. Polisen var också tvungen att ta ansvar för hur ordern om att skingra demonstranterna hade verkställts.

NHRC hade dock inget mandat att straffa någon och man väntade spänt på hur regeringen skulle bemöta deras kommande rapport. Trots att rapporten ännu inte var färdig stod det klart att NHRC hade bedömt att polisens agerande var i strid med de mänskliga rättigheterna och olagligt. NHRC lovade att man skulle skynda på identifieringen av de polisofficerare som gjort sig skyldiga till brott och presentera materialet för regeringen.

Den 22 oktober skrev Thaksin ett brev till "sina vänner i internationell media." I brevet förklarade Thaksin att han var oskyldig i ärendet om markköpet i Ratchadaphisek. Demokratiska partiets vice partiledare Korn Chatikavanij (Kon Chatikawanit) กรณ์ จาติกวณิช (19 februari 1964-) kontrade med att skriva ett eget öppet brev till Thaksin. Längst ner i denna artikel kan du läsa både Thaksins och Korns brev. Jag har inte översatt breven från engelska till svenska.

I oktober ryktades det att Thaksin skulle tala direkt via videolänk i ett TV-program i den statsägda kanalen NBT เอ็นบีที (National Broadcasting Service of Thailand). Detta skulle ske lördagen den 1 november, vilket kritiserades starkt och många kritiker menade att detta kunde bidra till ytterligare oroligheter i landet. TV-kanalens thailändska namn är Sathani Withayu Thorathat Haeng Prathet Thai สถานีวิทยุโทรทัศน์แห่งประเทศไทย.

Regeringen sattes därför under press att förhindra Thaksins tal. Den 30 oktober förklarade premiärminister Somchai att regeringen inte hade någon möjlighet att förhindra Thaksin att ringa till den politiska talkshowen Kwam Jing Wan Nee.

Torsdagen den 23 oktober hade premiärminister Somchai flugit till Beijing för att delta i forumet Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) การประชุมเอเชีย–ยุโรป (อาเซม). Detta var första gången som Somchai lämnade landet sedan han blev premiärminister. Det började nu spekuleras i om hans frånvaro skulle resultera i en ny militärkupp. Detta hade ju drabbat Thaksin då han befann sig i USA den 19 september 2006. Under mötet i Beijing skulle Somchai också diskutera gränsproblemen med Kambodja.

Thaksins brev;

Dear friends in the international media, I am writing to you today to clarify a few facts. The news headlines have reported that I have been convicted ocorruption for two years stemming from the purchase of land by my wife, Khunying Pojaman Shinawatra.

What you have read is true. I was convicted for two years, but not because of the corruption charge. The only reason I was send, I was the prime minister.

I listened to the judgement yesterday and even now I am still confused; there is no evidence of fraud, corruption or abuse of power in relation to the bid in question; my wife was the one who was involved and made the decision to bid for the land, offered a lot more to the seller, the Financial Institution Development Fund (FIDF), than other bidders, signed the contract with the seller, paid for the land with no involvement from her husband except when he was required to sign a spousal consent form.

In terms of any alleged influence I may have had no direct supervisory power over the FIDF. Interestingly, the court did not find the sale transaction of my wife unlawful or illegal, they did not convict her because she is not a politician; nevertheless, I was. I trust that you will independently verify the above facts as professional journalists often do. Unfortunately, most of your professsional colleagues in Thailand refuse to do so.

The best I can comprehend is that I was convicted simply because I was a politician. In that case I was quite guilty because I was quite a successful politician. I got elected twice by the majority of Thai people as prime minister.

If I were to be guilty of anything, that would be for what I have shown to the Thai people, especially those underprivileged rural Thais that they can, and have the right to, demand their government to provide effective policy and programmes to improve their lives.

I received this judgement with mixed feeling; relief for my wife as I pulled her into enough troubles because of my political ambition to bring greatness and well-being to my country and my people, amused and bitter about the illogical judgment, and worry for those politicians in Thailand who could go to jail simply because their unhappy spouses may have sought to manipulate the law. 

For those of you who may not be too familiar with Thailand, state offices and enterprises in Thailand are doing so many businesses from telecommunication, banking, power generator or even owning gas stations.

I do not know should I laugh or cry to see the direction Thailand is moving forward: a democratically elected leader was put out of job because he cooked on a TV show but those who unlawfully trespassed and occupy Government House got protection from the Court.
Whatever is happening to me is a political-driven action collaborated by various groups of privileged elites who believe in anything but democracy. I am a threat to them because I represent the principle of liberal democracy, which promotes hope and pride of the poor of my country.

Thailand is and will remain a great and beautiful country. A few people cannot obstruct the will of majority of the people. I believe that at the end Thai people will win over this struggle. And the end of their nightmare is not far.

Dear Dr Thaksin,

It has been some time since we last spoke, but I felt the urge to write to you having seen your 'open letter' to your 'friends' in the international media, dated October 22, 2008. 

Given the fact that you chose not to face the various criminal and corruption charges against you in Thailand, and given that you are in the process of seeking asylum in the UK, I can understand why you wrote what you did. It's a shame though, since, once again, you feel compelled to harm the country of your birth in order to protect and promote your own personal interests. 

It would have been so much better had you been more honest in your assessment of your predicament. Specifically related to the land procurement case in which you were found guilty of conflict of interest, we would have been interested to hear why it was that your legal team was caught and convicted of blatant attempts to bribe court officials.

Furthermore, you are fully aware that the law you broke was the highest law of the land, being an infringement in a key article in the Constitution designed to penalise acts considered criminal on the part of those who hold political office. Indeed, it was a breach of both the 1997 constitution you love as well as the current 2007 Constitution that was accepted in a nationwide referendum. 

You referred to the ruling against Khun Samak, your chosen heir, and portray the case as a ruling against the fact that he cooked on TV when you know full well that the actual crime was his breach of the Constitution barring those in office from holding paid employment. Your definition of 'facts' leaves a lot to be desired and I worry that you actually believe what you are saying. 

It is precisely because it is so difficult the world over to actually catch clever politicians with their hands in the till that we have laws against conflicts of interests - it is a reflection of our society's desire for good governance, not dissimilar to codes of conducts in most leading corporations in the private sector. 

It may be true that there are the so-called elites who don't like you, but I can assure you that there are plenty of grass-root members of the Thai population who are also not too keen on having leaders who cheat. You got away early in your political career with an 'honest mistake' when you failed to properly disclose your assets, but how many more of these 'honest' mistakes do you think the Thai people should allow you?

You are once again charged with hiding assets even now, not least the money you used to buy Manchester City. After all, you no longer even try to pretend that it was not your own money that was used to buy the football club, even though you never disclosed, as was legally required, that you ever had any money overseas.

I won't go into details about your wife being convicted of tax fraud and the fact that the government you support is still doing everything they can to distort the course of justice here in Thailand. Frankly, if you really wanted to present facts, you should provide these details yourself. You are right in saying that all Thais are concerned about the direction the country is taking, but I believe that the situation would be much improved if you were to leave us alone to clean up the mess you left us in.
